A suspect was in custody Friday after a shooting was reported earlier in the day at Highland High School in Palmdale, Calif., the Los Angeles Sheriff's Office told Fox News.

A 15-year-old male student was shot "in the arm/shoulder," brought to the "hospital by an unknown individual," and is in stable condition, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

A 14-year-old male with a gun was identified and there were no other subjects, they added.

The sheriff's office previously tweeted that a male juvenile had been detained and a firearm was recovered.

The suspect appeared to be visible in video taken of a sheriff's car sitting near a shopping mall about a mile from the school.

Officials said they received a call about an individual with a gun on the high school's campus at about 7 a.m. local time, which is a half hour before school was set to begin.

The sheriff's office said in the press release that the suspect's father called a friend of the family, who was an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer, and said he'd gotten a call that morning from the 14-year-old's mother, who "told him they were having trouble with the suspect who had run away from the house."

"The LAPD Officer then got a call from the subjects' father, who said the subject had just called him," the press release said. "The subject told the dad, he shot his gun in the air and was headed towards a local shopping center."

The off-duty officer went to the market and located the teen before calling authorities.

"Deputies arrived at the shopping center and detained the subject for one count of Attempted Murder," the press release said. The weapon, an SKS rifle, was also found in a field located west of the school, authorities said.

Highland High School, which has an attendance of about 4,000 students, is located 65 miles from Los Angeles. The school was cleared by authorities, however, the investigation into the incident continued.

The sheriff's office also tweeted that deputies investigated reports of shots fired near Manzanita Elementary School, located about seven miles from Highland High School, but the campus and school was cleared and no threat was discovered.
