Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8, her son King Charles III immediately ascended the throne. Buckingham Palace announced Thursday the longest-reigning monarch had died at Balmoral Castle surrounded by members of the royal family.

The announcement was made shortly after the queen had been placed under medical supervision after her doctors became "concerned" for her health earlier that day.

The queen's death brought about an immediate and historic change in titles and roles within the royal family. Prince Charles, now King Charles III's, heir to the throne is his eldest son, Prince William.
