Olympic shooter hints that future of sport is up in the air

A United States Olympic shooter is reflecting on the future of the sport following her second consecutive run at the Olympic Games.

Mary Tucker, a Florida native currently residing in the Czech Republic, qualified to represent Team USA in the Women's Air and Smallbore Rifle competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

"It's nice to come from a country that takes so much pride in sports," Tucker told Fox News Digital. "I always say that I like representing the U.S.A. because it's one of those powerhouse countries in sports, in most things, but in sports especially."

Tucker, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, soared over shooting’s viewership at the 2024 Games, though she is concerned about the future of the Olympic sport.

"There is always talk of whether [shooting] is going to be taken out of the Games," she said. "That's kind of something that always looms. I think it's important for people to realize, and especially people who are fans of sports, that sport shooting and other types of shooting are fairly different."

Tucker said "it's a very safe sport" despite similarities to the basic principles.

Vatican expresses disappointment at Olympics opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Olympics was immediately under criticism, and it "saddened" Pope Francis.

A statement released by the Vatican Saturday evening said there should be "no allusions ridiculing the religious convictions of many people."

"The Holy See was saddened by certain scenes during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games and can only join the voices that have been raised in recent days to deplore the offence caused to many Christians and believers of other religions," the statement said.

"At a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no allusions ridiculing the religious convictions of many people. The freedom of expression, which is clearly not called into question here, is limited by respect for others."

The ceremony turned heads when it included a headless Marie Antoinette early on, then a ménage à trois.

However, what made critics most angry was when the ceremony appeared to depict a mock Last Supper with people dressed in drag.

Simone Biles says people have 'gotta stop' asking athletes 1 specific question

Simone Biles is just trying to soak in the moment.

Biles has further cemented her legacy as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time after she took home the gold medal in the women’s vault final on Saturday, marking her third gold medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Biles will be 31 by the time the Los Angeles games come around, and while she's shown no signs of slowing down in Paris, that's certainly considered "elderly" in gymnastics.

But again, Biles is still rewriting the history books, and just wants to enjoy it. So, she took a subtle shot at, perhaps, the media and just about everyone else who asks a specific question.

"you guys really gotta stop asking athletes what’s next after they win a medal at the Olympics. let us soak up the moment we’ve worked our whole lives for," the now seven-time Olympic gold medalist posted on X Sunday.

It sure remains to be seen what Biles' future holds, and it is intriguing to wonder what is next, considering her continued dominance.

But one can't blame her for wanting to take it all in.

Scottie Scheffler gets emotional during national anthem after winning Olympic gold

Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free course record 62 at Le Golf National on Sunday for a come-from-behind gold medal victory.

Sure, the impact of the victory will have on his all-time legacy may not be up there with his two green jackets or even his two Ryder Cup victories. But it's no secret that this was his most emotional reaction to a victory.

While standing on the podium for the medal ceremony, Scheffler burst into happy tears during the playing of the national anthem.

"I get emotional in general. Usually, I have a bit more time after a tournament to kind of reflect and compose myself, but with this one, you kind of go from one thing to the next," Scheffler told NBC shortly after the win. "You don't really reflect until you're standing up there on the podium. …"

"That was a pretty special moment I'll remember for a long time: Standing up there on the podium with the gold medal around my neck," he said.

The 27-year-old entered the clubhouse with a share of the lead at -19, but Tommy Fleetwood bogeyed 17 to drop a shot and couldn't chip in to force a gold-medal playoff. Jon Rahm, who owned a share of the 54-hole lead, double-bogeyed late to all but put himself out of contention.

Second boxer who previously failed gender test guaranteed medal at Olympics

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting, who previously failed a gender test, was guaranteed an Olympic medal from the Paris Games after the fighter defeated Bulgaria’s Svetlana Kamenova Staneva via unanimous decision in the quarterfinals.

Lin and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif have as faced scrutiny over a disqualification from the 2023 International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s World Championship. Both will now be at least bronze medal winners as there is no other match for losing semifinalists.

Lin was knocked to the canvas twice during the bout while Staneva took several punches to the face. Staneva faced boos during the bout and Lin was cheered following the announcement of the result, according to The Sun.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach defended having Lin and Khelif fight in the women’s division on Saturday.

"What is going on in this context in the social media with all this hate speech, with this aggression and abuse, and fueled by this agenda, is totally unacceptable," Bach said.

Amid the controversy, Lin received support from former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on social media Friday. Lin defeated Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova via unanimous decision.

IOC: Gender tests at center of boxing controversy are 'flawed'

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) slammed the gender tests at the center of a controversy with two boxers fighting in the women’s division – Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) said in 2023 that Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the tournament for testing positive for "XY chromosomes" and have maintained that both fighters have an unfair advantage in the women’s division.

But IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Khelif and Lin were "carted off and tested" during the 2023 boxing world championships because "there were suspicions against them."

"There’s a whole range of reasons why we won't deal with this," Adams said. "Partly confidentiality. Partly medical issues. Partly that there was no basis for the test in the first place. And partly data sharing of this is also highly against the rules, international rules.

"The whole process is flawed. From the conception of the test, to how the test was shared with us, to how the tests have become public, is so flawed that it’s impossible to engage with it."

Khelif and Lin are both onto the next round of their competition and are both guaranteed medals in the Olympics.

Immers said he and Van de Velde will remain a team with several tournaments still to come this year.“We still got a ninth on our first Olympics. And I’m proud of that,” Immers said. “And we keep on going.”

Carl Lewis: Track 'needs someone' like Noah Lyles as its champion

Olympic legend Carl Lewis talked to Fox News Digital on Saturday and talked about Noah Lyles and the need for him to dominate at the Paris Olympics.

"I think the sport needs someone like him that’s a champion. He’s the defending champion, the fastest man in the world right now, and we need someone to grab onto. I think he’s the perfect guy to do that, and I’m excited about that," Lewis said in a recent interview.

"I think track does better when we do have a superstar. That’s why I think if Noah were to win, he would elevate the sport as well. As opposed to saying ‘I wonder who’s going to win,’ people want to say ‘I want him’ or ‘I don’t want him.’ They want to root for someone, or root against someone. I think it creates more intensity when you have someone that dominates, and that’s been throughout history. … People have really gravitated to the sport when people really dominated more."

Lyles will likely be competing in the 100-meter men’s final later today.

South Sudan claims biased officiating in Olympics loss to Serbia

South Sudan suffered a loss in Olympic men’s basketball at the hands of Serbia, 96-85, on Saturday and head coach Royal Ivey was upset with the officiating.

Ivey said the foul discrepancy during the game was evidence of bias in the game.“They shot 31 free throws; we shot six free throws?” Ivey said. “Let's tell the story. Let's tell the real story, because that's a travesty. How do they shoot 31 free throws and we shoot six free throws? How?”

South Sudan failed to make the knockout round because of the loss.

“My guys were out there giving their all -- blood, sweat and tears -- and you tell me how we shot six free throws? We shot one free throw in the second half,” Ivey added.

Luol Deng, federation president and former NBA star, questioned why there were no African referees at the Olympics.

“I don't know why there's no African referees in the Olympics. It's 2024,” he said. “If we're representing the continent, then we've got to be represented fully. That's something that we've got to keep working on. But if these referees aren't familiar with our game, with our style, then I don't know what the world championship or the Olympics is. Is it just a European basketball style and we're not allowed to be aggressive?”

He called playing in the Olympics with Durant and LeBron James on the same floor is ‘everything I ever dreamed of.”

“Him and Bron, they’re the best two people,” Edwards said. “Team players, they always want to see the person next to them shine. I’m the same way. So it’s perfect.”
