AT&T is putting its fake 5G logo on iPhones too

After making its way to some Android devices last month, AT&T's misleading "5G E" icon is now available on iPhones and iPads, too.

As MacRumors reported, the fake 5G icon is rolling out to iPhones and iPads as part of Apple's second iOS 12.2 beta, released on Monday. If you're on AT&T and see this icon, don't be fooled: your iPhone wasn't just magically upgraded to 5G, and you're not connected to a 5G network.

AT&T is just changing the "4G LTE" indicator to "5G E" (short for "5G Evolution") in areas where it offers gigabit LTE. As PCMag's Lead Mobile Analyst Sascha Segan reported late last month, the carrier's fake 5G logo "has made people on the AT&T forums appear to think they're getting 5G when none of them are."

In a statement to PCMag, AT&T confirmed that iOS users who download the new beta will start seeing this icon.

"Today, some iPhone and iPad users could start seeing our 5G Evolution indicator on their devices," an AT&T spokesperson said in an email to PCMag. "The indicator simply helps customers know when they are in an area where the 5G Evolution experience may be available."

Keep in mind that no current phones – including iPhones – even have 5G. Apple probably won't release a 5G iPhone until September 2020, so don't hold your breath for one this year.

Meanwhile, on a more positive note, the iOS 12.2 beta 2 also delivers four new Animoji: a giraffe, shar, owl, and warthog, according to 9to5Mac. The Animoji feature is available on iPhone X and later and third-generation iPad Pro models.
