A Tennessee death row inmate is awake and talking after surviving two doses of a lethal injection drug during a failed execution, her attorneys said Tuesday.

Christa Pike continues to receive critical medical care following Tennessee’s attempt to execute her last Wednesday, her attorneys said in a statement posted on the Mercy for Christa website.

"Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care," the statement said.

They said Pike remains handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed despite severe damage to her arms.

"Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery," the statement said.

Her attorneys said Pike survived two complete rounds of lethal injection under Tennessee’s protocol despite their warnings about problems with her veins. They thanked first responders and hospital staff for her care and renewed their request for Tennessee’s governor to commute her sentence to life without parole.

Pike, now 50, was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Knoxville Job Corps Center.

Pike was 18 when she and two classmates lured Slemmer to a park, where they tortured her for nearly an hour before crushing her skull with a chunk of broken asphalt, former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith previously told Fox News Digital.

Pike kept a fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a trophy and showed it to classmates before her arrest.

Pike’s attorneys have also filed an emergency motion to preserve evidence from the failed execution attempt. They plan to hold a press conference Wednesday following a Davidson County Chancery Court hearing scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. local time.
