The woman was in her 60s and lived within the area of the river in Niagara Falls, New York, according to officials, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Pictures and video from social media show the car submerged in the rapids.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the New York State Parks said water levels in the river were lowered by the Power Authority after New York State Park Police were notified of a black vehicle in the river at 11:50 a.m. The car was only 50 yards from the brink of the American Falls.

Drones and the Niagara County Sheriff helicopter were both used to determine if any individuals were in the vehicle, according to the spokesperson.

Officials from the New York State Parks are still determining how to remove the car from the river, and an investigation into how the car got into the river is underway.
