A mommy blogger has come clean about her past as a sex worker after it was circulated online by someone she said tried to discredit her.

Candice Brathwaite, a popular U.K. blogger, took to Instagram on Friday to share her past with nearly 54,000 followers.

“It has come to light that something I was hoping, for the sake of my children, not to have to address (until later in my life when they are older), has been shared online and circulated to my professional partners by someone trying to discredit me,” Brathwaite wrote in a post.

Brathwaite shared that six years ago, she participated in a documentary about sex workers because “for a time, I was one myself.”

“I am not ashamed of that time in my life and my partner and family have always been aware of it, although I regret the embarrassment that this will cause those close to me, both personally and professionally,” she said.

“Life is complicated. I can’t pretend I have all the answers but I am trying to be as transparent in this moment as I possibly can be," she added. "If what I have done has caused harm and pain than I am truly sorry.”

Most of Brathwaite’s followers came to the blogger’s defense, arguing that the mother of two has nothing to be ashamed about.

“This is not something you need to apologize for -- period,” one person commented. “And all this person has done is given you the opportunity to see just how loved and supported you are.”

Another follower wrote, “You have nothing to apologize nor feel embarrassed for, but I’m sorry you’ve been pushed to discuss something you aren’t ready to."

“This part of your story is exactly that, just part of it. It was a job you had when you needed it and nothing more," they added.

“Candice we stand with you,” another person commented. “You’re incredible in every way and a powerhouse of inspiration to me and so many others. We’re lucky to have you as a role model and my God I wish I knew you growing up.”

One follower, however, said that while she, too, felt Brathwaite had nothing to apologize for, she couldn’t understand how the mommy blogger intended to keep her past life as a sex worker a secret if she filmed a documentary about it.

“You’ve nothing to be ashamed of. I’m not clear, however, how you can maintain you wanted to keep it from your children until they were older, then made a TV [program] about it,” the person wrote. “I can’t square that particular circle.”
